The lesson of meritocracy - that is, that what you earn is a direct result of what you're worth is so embedded in our cultural understanding that we almost seem to put it on the same level as the sun rising and setting. And many of us seem to believe in our cores that charity is a necessary evil, and that giving to poor people without attaching a fisherman's net worth of conditions and judgements is somehow impossible.
And yet, the pilot projects that cities in the U.S, Canada and across the globe have run, one after another after another, are clearly indicating that when you support a person's basic needs in a manner that respects their decision making and their knowledge of their own necessities, people do just that.
