This week, we finish our review of the First Principles of the Fusion Era with one that’s simple, but oh so hard. In a period of transition and uncertainty, standing up for what we know our communities, our organizations — and ourselves — need often means making people who are wedded to the old model uncomfortable, even angry.
And we all know that people who are in a minority, or part of a historically disadvantaged community, may be more likely than others to see where change needs to happen. And they’re mostly likely to be at risk, to be actively threatened, when the powers that be don’t like that.
So for many of us, being brave doesn’t just mean speaking truth to power ourselves. It may also mean supporting, perhaps even protecting, those who may not have our privleges. And sometimes that’s more subtle, and thus more confusing and uncertain, than simply stepping into the line of fire ourselves.
