For today’s post, I’ve got a few updates and a mind (ha) blowing fact for you.
Finally…time to grow the businesses we need the most!
Few people need to be as neuroplastic as an under-resourced small business owner, but too often they’re so busy holding body and soul together that they can’t even think about how they could create jobs and wealth. But that might be about to change!
At the end of last month, the Lincoln & Gilbert initiative became the inaugural sponsor of Scale Up Week, an immersive training and connection event for underresourced small business owners who are ready to grow! Scale Up Week will happen in Cincinnati later in 2025, and Trep House and the Good Hood Foundation are looking for sponsors, donors and other participants. If you or your organization want to get in front of more than 200 of the region’s most determined small business owners, send me a note. A sponsorship prospectus will be coming out soon.
Books for Brains
In yesterday’s post, I gave a link to one of the book on the Books & Good Stuff page at Wiseeconomy.com. These books have been essential to developing my own neuroplasticity and my understanding of what Future Ready people, organizations and communities need to thrive. And they’re a pleasure to read or listen to! I hope you’ll check them out — and don’t forget to scroll to the bottom of the page for a special non-book Good Stuff that I think you’ll love!
Brain Power
You know how I talked earlier this week about how our neurological resistance to change evolved because our brains needed so dang much energy? I just learned that scientists estimate that our brains use an average of 20% of our total available energy — despite the fact that our brains make up only 2% of our body mass. No wonder a Netflix binge feels so good….
Our Industrial Era businesses were built around the physical limits of our bodies’ energy, but this just makes even more clear to me that the kind of brain work people in all industries are being asked to provide today necessitates a whole different way of organizing work.
Coming Soon
I am working with staff from the American Planning Association to develop a Learning Lab about online public engagement methods. It looks like I will be giving that session at the National Planning Conference this March 29 in Denver, Colorado. This topic was identified by APA as a crucial upskilling opportunity for planners, and I couldn’t agree more. Nothing forces us to be neuroplastic like technology.
If you’re planning to go to NPC this year, make sure you sign up for this session — space for Learning Labs is always limited.
And don’t forget to join me every Thursday at 12 Noon Eastern for Future Ready Live on LinkedIn! This month I’ll also be having some special guests, so check it out!
